## Scaffolding across Chichester: what we do here
Chichester is effectively on our doorstep. JBS Yard at Eastergate is roughly six miles west of the city, a straight run along the A27, which is why so much of our domestic and commercial work sits inside the Chichester district — from the Georgian centre and the streets around the cathedral out to Fishbourne, Lavant, Boxgrove, Tangmere, Westhampnett and the villages under the Downs.

The city centre is the most demanding part of it. Inside the Roman street plan and the conservation area, frontages sit hard on the pavement, deliveries have restrictions, and the buildings behind those frontages are frequently Georgian or Victorian with soft lime-mortar brickwork. A scaffold there is a planning exercise before it is a building exercise: where the wagon stands, how the tube gets through, how pedestrians pass, and where the ties can safely go.

Outside the centre it changes completely. The 1930s to 1970s housing at Whyke, Summersdale, Parklands and the northern estates gives straightforward elevations but soft garden ground, mature planting and conservatories to work around. The villages bring flint, thatch and long, low farm-style buildings.

Being six miles away means the practical things work. A site visit can usually be arranged quickly, an extra lift or a bridged section mid-hire is a short trip, and the scaffold comes down promptly when your builder finishes rather than sitting in your drive for a fortnight.

Why us

## Why Chichester clients use Square Scaffolding
Chichester is our nearest town of any size and a large share of our work comes from it, much of it through roofers, builders and renderers who recommend us because we turn up on the day and strike the scaffold promptly. Several of our published reviews come from exactly that route — a trade recommendation followed by a job that ran without incident.

The formal side is straightforward: 24 years in the trade, in-date CISRS cards on every operative, a Gold Scaffolding Supervisor card, Scaffolding Association membership, a Checkatrade listing, and £10,000,000 of public liability cover.

### Six miles from the yard
The shortest travel of anywhere we work, which is what makes fast site visits and mid-hire adaptations realistic.

### 24 years on this building stock
Georgian centre, flint villages and post-war estates — Billy has scaffolded all three repeatedly.

### Trade-recommended
Much of our Chichester work arrives through local roofers and builders who need access that arrives on time.

### Free site visit and written price
No charge, no obligation, and the figure is confirmed in writing before we book.

### Insured and carded
£10m public liability, CISRS operatives, Gold Supervisor card, certificates on request.

## Scaffolding challenges specific to Chichester

### Narrow streets and pavement frontages
In the city centre and the older streets around it, the front wall of the building is often the edge of the footway. That means the scaffold either stands on the pavement or is built with a pedestrian route through it, and it means the delivery wagon may not be able to stop where the scaffold is going.

We work out the standing position, the carry distance and any licence requirement on the site visit, and tell you before you commit rather than on the morning of the build.

- Pedestrian routes and protection where footways are affected
- Delivery and carry routes agreed before the build date
- Neighbour access and doorways kept clear

### Conservation area and period fabric
A large part of central Chichester is a conservation area, with listed buildings scattered well beyond it. Lime-mortar brickwork, flint, render and old joinery are all easy to mark, and tie holes cannot simply be drilled wherever is convenient.

We plan tie positions around what the building can take, protect the surfaces the scaffold touches, and where appropriate use non-invasive tying methods instead of drilling into historic fabric.

### Coastal-plain ground conditions
Chichester sits on the coastal plain, and much of the ground around the city and the villages is soft, low-lying or made up. In winter, garden ground gives way easily under a loaded standard.

Every job gets a ground assessment on the visit — sole boards, spread bases or a designed foundation where the ground demands it, so the structure stays level through the full hire.

### Weather off the Solent and the Downs
Chichester gets wind funnelled off the coastal plain and rain sweeping in from the Solent. Sheeted or netted scaffolds behave very differently in that, and open roof works can lose days at a time.

Where a roof is coming off, a temporary roof keeps the structure dry and the trades productive. Where sheeting is needed, the tie pattern is designed for the extra load rather than added as an afterthought.
